Hamilton first responders faced the chill of an early winter afternoon as they worked tirelessly to recover a vehicle submerged in the Great Miami River. The call arrived around 3:40 p.m. yesterday, prompting a flurry of activity near Pyramid Hill Boulevard and Columbia Road, as reported by WLWT. The coroner was subsequently called to the scene, yet detailed information regarding the incident and potential casualties remained unreleased as of yesterday night.
The presence of the emergency crews lingered well into the evening, with the outline of the white vehicle barely visible below the water's icy surface. According to WLWT, family members of a missing man, last seen on Friday, fear it may be their loved one trapped within the river's unforgiving grasp. They reported him missing after discovering his dog alone at home, describing his disappearance as unusual.
In a separate report, FOX19 confirmed that the Hamilton Police Department and Butler County Sheriff's Office responded to the report of the submerged car. As the situation unfolded, multiple local agencies were engaged in the ongoing operation south of Columbia Bridge.
Efforts to retrieve the car and determine what transpired included the deployment of drones and deliberations on the safest approach to access the vehicle amidst the harsh eight-degree weather. Brian Ungerbuehler, Hamilton Police Public Information Officer, pointed out via Journal-News that the car was entirely under when emergency responders arrived, with tire tracks seeming to lead directly into the icy river. No license plate could be seen, and the Butler County Sheriff's Office water rescue team was noted to have joined the response.
