The Houston Fire Department is mourning the loss of Captain Aaron Rios who tragically passed away yesterday due to an off-duty medical emergency that occurred during the holiday season. A solemn vigil was held at HCA Kingwood Hospital last night, where over a hundred firefighters and members of the community came together to pay their respects, according to a Houston Fire Department statement.
Fire Chief Thomas Muñoz, profoundly moved by the loss, reflected on Captain Rios's character and contributions. "Captain Rios was a great man by all accounts, and the Houston Fire Department was privileged to benefit from his work," Chief Muñoz told the Houston Fire Department. In light of this tragic loss, the department has begun to actively prepare to assist the Rios family during this trying period with the support of the Firefighter Support Network.
Mayor John Whitmire also extended his condolences and highlighted Captain Rios's impact on the community. "The City of Houston mourns the loss of Capt. Rios, is a courageous firefighter and committed public servant. His dedication to the Houston Fire Department will always be remembered," Mayor Whitmire said. Details on the funeral arrangements are still pending, as per the Houston Fire Department website.
Captain Rios, who was 46, joined the fire department in September 2003 and was promoted to Captain in 2017. He faithfully served at Station 104/D-shift in Kingwood. "My heart breaks for his family, both those at home and his extended family here in the department," Chief Muñoz told Houston Fire Department.
