In a recent law enforcement action in Pasco County, a man was shot and killed during an altercation with sheriff's deputies and a K9 unit. The Pasco County Sheriff’s Office has announced that the incident occurred last night in Hudson, where deputies were pursuing 41-year-old Matthew Vincent Phillips due to a warrant for his arrest on multiple felony charges. The man, who had been at large since Friday, was located at a residence on Princeton Avenue.

Deputies arrived at the scene around 9:30 p.m. and, according to the Pasco County Sheriff's Office, spent approximately 30 minutes attempting negotiation. Explained by Sheriff Chris Nocco and reported by WFLA, due to the presence of others in the house, including children, they took measures to ensure all persons other than Phillips were safely evacuated. Although deputies made several attempts to de-escalate the situation, Phillips reportedly emerged from the back of the house armed and combative.

The sheriff's office has released bodycam footage capturing the moments leading up to the fatal encounter. According to a post on the Pasco Sheriff's Office Facebook page, Phillips confronted deputies with a firearm in hand and was engaged by a PSO K9. During the close-quarters altercation, deputies repeatedly instructed Phillips to drop his weapon. When he failed to comply, the encounter tragically ended with deputies firing upon Phillips, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

"If you are threatening to harm a Pasco Deputy, if you are threatening to harm a K9, if you are threatening to harm a person in our community, this is what happens when you do not comply with our orders," Sheriff Nocco said in a statement obtained by WFLA.

As per PSO's standard protocol, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement has taken over the ongoing investigation, a separate statement conveyed by the sheriff's office on their Facebook page noted. The deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave pursuant to policy, while no injuries to any PSO members were reported.

Focusing on the events that led to the use of lethal force, FOX13 News detailed that Phillips had multiple felony warrants and had barricaded himself at his home, eventually threatening deputies with a gun. The outcome of this case is pending the FDLE's investigation, and authorities reported that there is no current public safety threat related to the incident.
