The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office is currently conducting an investigation into an in-custody death that occurred in the early hours of Monday. Deputies responded to a call in the 6400 block of Marcie Street around 4 a.m. for a man exhibiting symptoms of a medical emergency and subsequently requested ambulance assistance to transport the man for hospital treatment, according to WDSU.
WGNO reports that the man attempted to flee while being escorted to the ambulance, however, deputies apprehended the individual a short distance away, which led to him being handcuffed but he soon collapsed while being taken back to the emergency vehicle, and despite being quickly transported to the hospital, the man later died; an autopsy is expected to be conducted by the Jefferson Parish coroner to ascertain the cause and nature of death.
In addition to the reported events, WWLTV mentioned that Emergency Medical Services had initially attended the scene and determined the necessity of hospital treatment for the man, whose identity has not been disclosed to the public at this time, leaving the community with many questions in the wake of this incident. The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office has not released further details regarding the specifics of the medical emergency or the sequence of events leading up to the man's death.
