Following a recent court hearing, Jerry Dorisme has been determined competent to stand trial for the chilling murder of 13-year-old Rose Dieujuste. The ruling overturned an earlier assessment that had deemed him unfit due to mental incapacity.
According to ClickOrlando, Dorisme faces charges of first-degree murder, kidnapping with intent to inflict bodily harm or terrorize, sexual battery, and attempted sexual battery following the events of July 4, when Dieujuste was found brutally attacked at an apartment complex on South Rio Grande Avenue. Dorisme was arrested after tips from the community led authorities to surveillance footage of a man quickly leaving the scene of the crime. Orange County Sheriff John Mina described the loss of the young girl as "senseless and brutal."
The young girl was on her way to a friend's apartment within the same complex when she disappeared, instigating a desperate search by neighbors and family. Her friend discovered Dieujuste's cell phone and shoes on the staircase, prompting a call to the family, as per Sheriff John Mina's statement detailed by WESH. The forensic trail ultimately led authorities to find Dieujuste in a utility closet, barely alive and with signs of a violent assault.
Judge Vincent Chiu delivered yesterday's decision to reverse the previous verdict on Dorisme's mental fitness to face his charges. This follows a comprehensive reevaluation, which involves multiple medical professionals. Dorisme has had past encounters with law enforcement, including a previous arrest for lewd and lascivious molestation, which was downgraded to child abuse.
The trial's next milestone will be an upcoming hearing scheduled for April 21, where further developments in the case are expected.
