Juan Fernandez-Barquin was sworn in as Miami-Dade County's new clerk of the courts and comptroller on Friday, with a ceremony that brought together friends, family, and colleagues in downtown Miami. Appointed initially by Gov. Ron DeSantis, Fernandez-Barquin later secured the position through a November election, expanding his role to oversee public records and manage county finances, as reported by NBC Miami. His mother had the honor to administer the oath of office during the ceremony.
Joining in offices with the responsibility for the fourth largest judicial circuit in the United States, Fernandez-Barquin expressed gratitude for his appointment. In his own welcome mat rolled out, prayers and stories from his childhood seasoned the ceremony, emphasizing his personal connection to the community he now serves. In an interview with NBC Miami, he stated, "I'm just incredibly appreciative of the county residents for supporting me, for voting for me, for electing me, for their vote of confidence in me, and I just wanna do the best I can for them."
The new clerk, in a move to increase transparency and accountability, has pledged to make it easier for Miami-Dade residents to understand how their tax dollars are spent. The Miami Herald highlighted this promise, indicating a commitment to providing clear answers about the financial workings of the county.
Enthusiastic support also came from U.S. Rep. Carlos Gimenez, who, attending the installation, praised his dear friend for the achievements thus far and the work lying ahead. Represented by his presence and in a post on his official Instagram account, Gimenez said, "I have nothing but great words to say about Juan Barquin. He is already a great clerk, he's gonna continue to do great work," a sentiment reflecting the confidence of the community in their newly appointed officer, according to NBC Miami. This was shared by Rep. Gimenez in various social media postings, including an Instagram post following the ceremony.
