After months of anticipation and multiple delays, it looks like the Kennedy Expressway reversible lanes are on track to reopen to the public next week. The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) confirmed that weather permitting, the final steps to clear away the construction zones should be completed this week, with the express lanes initially planned to open the week of January 13. According to WGN-TV, the reversible gates were delayed due to software issues and additional testing requirements, with the new lanes being a part of a broader rehabilitation project on the Kennedy Expressway valued at $150 million spread over three years.
To prepare for the opening, several overnight road closures will be necessary, IDOT announced Wednesday. Starting Thursday, Jan. 9, motorists can expect a series of lane closures affecting both the inbound and outbound sections of the expressway. However, during the overnight closures, at least one lane in each direction will remain open guaranteeing minimal traffic flow reported ABC7 Chicago. Moreover, these lane closures signify the final phase in the process of removing work zones barricades, and laying down new pavement markings.
The detailed timeline for the closures includes the two left lanes on the inbound Kennedy being shut down from Lawrence Avenue to the Edens junction along with similar closures on the inbound Edens starting Thursday night, as indicated by IDOT officials. On Friday and Saturday nights, various other segments of the expressway will see closures, these adjustments are absolutely crucial to transition into the final phase preceding the reopening of the express lanes which faced previous testing setbacks due to the intricacies of the reversible gate system WGN-TV elaborated.
IDOT assures that clear signage and direction will be provided throughout the closure periods and that the efficiency of the reversible gates system, notwithstanding earlier software hitches which are now resolved, would markedly improve the traffic situation once operational. Finalized schedules could shift subject to the influence of Chicago's unpredictable winter weather, with expected snow possibly affecting road conditions and the progress of work crews but officials remain optimistic that they will meet the targeted reopening date, given no substantial interference occurs according to ABC7 Chicago.
