A Las Cruces man, identified as Jesus Rubio, 28, was fatally shot by police following a traffic stop in Hobbs, New Mexico, as per details provided by the New Mexico State Police (NMSP).
The incident unfolded around 6 p.m. on Monday, at approximately 209 Marland St., when Rubio reportedly refused to comply with officers' commands during a routine traffic stop and instead concealed his right hand behind his back which led to a fatal response from law enforcement after he raised his arms in a manner suggesting he was aiming a weapon at the officers, this encounter, regrettably, culminated in his demise, according to KTSM.
In the aftermath of the shooting, authorities have maintained that the officers involved have been placed on standard administrative leave as is customary in such incidents, while the New Mexico State Police indicated that they are not in the position to declare whether the officers' actions were warranted, a determination that "rests solely with the district attorney's office," as obtained by KFOX-TV.
As the situation garnered public attention, a photo provided by NMSP emerged on Tuesday, adding visual context to Monday’s tragic event, however, names of the officers involved have not been disclosed pending the completion of the requisite interviews, an approach not uncommon in such situations where details are closely managed during ongoing investigations and reflective of standard protocol, as reported by KOAT.
