
Las Cruces Public Libraries is set to host a series of events in celebration of Black History Month, including a film screening and book discussions focused on the African American experience and the cultural impact of black artists. The library will present "Beloved," the film adaptation of Toni Morrison's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3, for community members to view the evocative story of a former slave's life after the Civil War.
The Banned Books Club will gather later in the month to discuss both the book and film adaptation of "Beloved," exchanging thoughts on the harrowing narrative that captures the haunting aftermath of slavery, the discussion is scheduled from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., Feb 27 at the Staff Conference Room at Thomas Branigan Memorial Library where participants are set to delve deep into Morrison's compelling work. According to Las Cruces Public Libraries, "Beloved" is a significant addition to the canon of American literature that mirrors the complex realities faced by people in post-Civil War Ohio.
Additionally, the Social Justice Reading Group is slated to hold a conversation around "A Little Devil in America: In Praise of Black Performance," by Hanif Abdurraqib, from 3-4 p.m. Feb. 25 at Branigan Memorial Library. This book awarded the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction and listed as a National Book Award finalist, centers on the influence of black performers across various art forms. The discussion promises to spark insight into the performances and societal contributions of icons like Michael Jackson and Patti LaBelle, among others.
