Las Cruces Public Libraries is stepping into the new year with a unique cultural offering, Palabras y Artesanías (Words and Crafts), a fusion of poetry discussion and hands-on crafting sessions. Starting January 14 at Thomas Branigan Memorial Library at 200 E. Picacho Avenue, the event promises an exploration of Latino heritage through the lens of poetry and personal expression, requiring interested participants to register in advance for these engaging sessions.

Funded by the Latino Poetry, Places We Call Home grant, this project is not just an isolated set of workshops but a part of a broader nationwide conversation sparked by an innovative poetry anthology. Divided into eight poignant themes ranging from Ancestry and Identity to Earth and Myth, each part aims to unlock different facets of the diverse Latino experience. According to the City of Las Cruces, the first session will dive into the Ancestry & Identity theme, paralleling the rich tapestry of culture, history, and community inherent in the works of Latino poets.

Adding a creative twist to the discussions, the inaugural session invites attendees to design their own Lucha Libre mask, an emblematic icon of Mexican wrestling. This craft resonates with the session's theme, as masks in the sport reflect the wrestler's personas and often become deeply intertwined with their public identity. All necessary materials for this crafting venture like masked hoods and leather, will be provided on-site.

Further sessions, scheduled for select Tuesdays throughout April at the same location, will explore other themes detailed in the anthology, enveloping participants in a comprehensive literary and cultural journey. Sessions are accessible through the library's events calendar, where additional information is readily available. For the convenience of the community, Mindy Del Campo, a librarian at the facility, is the point of contact for further inquiry, reachable at (575) 528-4024 or via email [email protected], as detailed by the City of Las Cruces.
