Two vehicles collided in Boone County, Indiana, causing severe injuries to one driver and minor injuries to another, according to the Boone County Sheriff's Office. The accident, which took place yesterday in the 5200 block of West State Road 32, involved an SUV and a minivan. The Sheriff's Office Facebook post provided details of the accident, stating that the SUV, while traveling eastbound, lost control and veered into the opposing lane, resulting in a head-on collision with the minivan.
The collision led to Johannes Ryff, a 64-year-old Lebanon resident, being ejected from his 1996 Jeep Cherokee; Ryff was found by first responders lying injured on the roadway beside his overturned vehicle, the SUV's driver was lucky that the minivan driver, Birtram Hampton, 49, of Indianapolis, sustained only minor injuries, albeit Hampton’s 2011 Honda Odyssey was found with significant front-end damage, off the roadway in a ditch. Both drivers were taken to local hospitals for treatment, with Ryff's condition being serious.
The Boone County Fatal Alcohol Crash Team was called in to investigate, implying that intoxication might be a factor in the crash. Details surrounding the specific cause of the accident remain sparse as the event is still under active investigation. Officials have indicated that they will provide updates when new information becomes available.
Several agencies, including the Lebanon Police Department, Lebanon Fire Department, and Boone County EMS, responded to the accident to assist in the emergency operations. The quick response of the first responders likely proved critical for the injured parties, particularly for Ryff who suffered serious bodily harm in the wreck, the community awaits further details on the ongoing investigation, hopeful for a transparent and thorough understanding of the events that led up this tragedy.
