A Lorain County Sheriff’s deputy has been suspended following allegations that he caused severe and irreversible injury to an inmate during an incident while the man was in custody. The incident, which reportedly occurred over a year and a half ago, involved deputy Brian Tellier, who is accused of recklessly slamming the inmate's head into a wall, resulting in partial paralysis. This led to the filing of a $40 million federal lawsuit against multiple defendants, as detailed in a Cleveland19 News report.
Recently elected Sheriff Jack Hall, who has pledged to remediate the deeply entrenched issues within his department, has taken decisive action by placing Tellier on paid administrative leave. This follows previous claims Hall articulated, highlighting a "culture of corruption" within the department that he now seeks to upend. Hall promised during his campaign that he would swiftly begin to enforce a regimen of accountability, aiming to clean house at the Sheriff's Office, as WHIO covered in their reporting.
Jeffrey Fry, the inmate at the center of this heartbreaking narrative, has been left grappling with the consequences of that May 2023 encounter. Fry's attorney, Nicholas DiCello, indicated that the damages sustained were permanent, confining Fry to a new and unforgiving reality due to his injuries. "Jeff's baseline now is what he's looking at for the rest of his life. Jeff's not going to get any better," DiCello told WHIO. The after-effects of the incident have compelled Fry to undergo extensive surgical procedures in a bid to regain some semblance of normal physical function.
