San Francisco's Chinatown neighborhood becomes the locus of a violent crime as the District Attorney's Office charges Jing Zhuang Li, 39, with multiple felonies, including attempted murder and elder abuse. In a press release by DA Brooke Jenkins, details of last Thursday's attack in a single-room occupancy building were shared.
The charges against Mr. Li include two counts of attempted murder, among others, after he allegedly assaulted two women, ages 87 and 69, with a metal wrench in their apartment building on the 600 block of Broadway. "There is no place for violence in our city," District Attorney Jenkins stated. "I wish the victims a speedy recovery. My office will now do everything in our power to fight for justice in the courtroom for the victims and all of those impacted by this attack." The brutality of the assaults, evidenced by severe injuries like a fractured skull and multiple fractures in the second victim, indicates the gravity of the crimes committed.
Mr. Li's arraignment is set for next Monday, reflecting the legal system's prompt response to such serious allegations. The District Attorney's Office has also moved to detain Li pending trial, citing the public safety risk he poses.
While the charges signal an important step in the legal process, the investigation remains ongoing. Authorities urge anyone with information to contact the San Francisco Police Department Tip Line or Text a Tip to TIP411, emphasizing the potential for community members to contribute to bringing closure to this distressing event. Both victims continue to recover from their injuries, which, in the case of the 87-year-old woman, included major bleeding and a fractured skull.
