A tragic event unfolded yesterday morning in Charlotte's Steele Creek division, as 31-year-old Damonta Stephane Alexander perished in a vehicular accident. According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, authorities were called to the 7400 block of Steele Creek Road around 5:40 a.m., where they discovered an overturned 2012 Honda Accord with Alexander inside, who was later pronounced dead by MEDIC at the scene.

The Major Crash Investigation Unit and the DWI Task Force were brought in to not only to determine the details of the incident but to also begin piecing together the events that led up to it. Early reports suggest Alexander's vehicle was traveling northbound at a high speed when he ran off the road to the right before colliding with a brick sign which caused the car to overturn. It has also been stated that Alexander was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

In a statement obtained by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, speed is being considered a significant factor in this collision. There is also suspicion of impairment, and authorities are awaiting toxicology results to provide further clarity. The exact cause of the accident, however, remains under investigation.

The site of the crash was processed by members of Crime Scene Search (CSS) who collected physical evidence as part of the ongoing investigation. CMPD has encouraged any witnesses or individuals with information related to the crash to reach out to Detective Sessoms or Crime Stoppers and have provided contact information for the public to assist in their efforts. CMPD Public Affairs will release more details as they continue to thoroughly unravel the circumstances of this fatal event.
