In Atlanta, Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority, in partnership with The King Center, has introduced a commemorative bus to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King. The bus features imagery reflecting this year's King holiday theme, "Mission Possible: Protecting Freedom, Justice, and Democracy in the Spirit of Nonviolence 365," as reported by Fox5 Atlanta.
Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority Board Chair Jennifer Ide expressed pride in celebrating influential figures, stating, "Public transit connects people to opportunity, and this commemorative bus stands as a reminder of the power of inclusion and justice to drive transformative change," according to Fox5 Atlanta. The bus route will serve areas important to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s life and legacy, reflecting his view that urban transit is "a genuine civil rights issue."
Route 3 of MARTA will pass landmarks like MLK Drive, Sweet Auburn, the Atlanta University Center, and H.E. Holmes Station, with a restored 1955 bus displayed near Dr. King's birthplace. Rev. Bernice King, CEO of the King Center, called on people to actively live out her father's principles of nonviolence and justice, especially around the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday and the presidential inauguration. As she stated, "I’m calling us to do more than, quote King, which we love to do," as per WGAU Radio.
