A MARTA bus operator was fatally shot during a confrontation that arose over a fare evasion issue at the Decatur MARTA station. The incident, which took place on Friday close to 6:30 p.m., quickly escalated from a verbal dispute to a tragic act of gun violence, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta.
As detailed by MARTA Police Chief Scott Kreher, the event unfolded when an argument over fare payment led to a physical altercation. During the confrontation, the bus driver, identified as 47-year-old Leroy Ramos, was shot three times and later succumbed to his injuries. Adding to the chaos of the incident, a stray bullet caused a superficial injury to a bystander, who has been taken to the hospital for treatment, according to Atlanta News First.
Authorities have apprehended two juvenile suspects in relation to the shooting, while a third suspect remains at large. MARTA Police swiftly responded to the scene after an emergency dispatch officer received a call reporting the incident, receiving assistance from Decatur police during the subsequent investigation.
