Mayor Daniel Lurie Demonstrates San Francisco's Disaster Readiness in Emergency ExerciseSource: City and County of San Francisco

Mayor Daniel Lurie showed off San Francisco's readiness for disaster as he participated in an emergency preparedness exercise. According to a recent report by the City and County of San Francisco, the city's fire department carried out a drill to demonstrate the capabilities of its high-pressure fire hydrant system and the St. Francis Fireboat, essential components of the Emergency Firefighting Water Supply (EFWS) system created to combat major emergencies.

The EFWS system, integrated to support firefighting efforts during significant events like earthquakes or overwhelming fires, steps in when the regular water supply falls short. Featuring key assets such as two saltwater pump stations, the portable hydrant system, and other high-pressure assets, the drill was a snapshot of the city's commitment to safety. "As we continue to support the urgent efforts in Southern California, we have many tools in our toolbox to keep San Franciscans safe in an emergency," Mayor Lurie told the City and County of San Francisco.

Mayor Lurie's appearance at the San Francisco Fire Department's Fireboat Station 35 was not just for show. It demonstrated the practical application of city-wide disaster strategies, urging residents to stay informed about creating and updating their emergency plans and directing them to SF72.org for guidance. The detailed operations of the EFWS were on display, from the fireboat's role in pumping water into the system to the ladder truck company's handling of far-reaching aerial nozzles.

SFFD Incoming Chief Dean Crispen commended the city's preventative measures against possible destruction by fire, noting the foresight in the 1900s that laid the groundwork for today's advanced procedures. "These redundancies are designed to prevent hydrants from going dry in the event of a catastrophic fire," Crispen told the City and County of San Francisco.
