The Memphis police community is gearing up to pay homage to one of their fallen, Officer Charles Cathey. In a recent social media post, Memphis Police Department est.1827 announced that it will hold a "Sea of Blue" tribute on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, starting at 7:30 p.m. Officer Cathey, whose service and dedication to the community was cut short, passed away last Monday.
Taking off from Tiger Lane at 450 Early Maxwell Boulevard, the procession is set to make a conspicuous swing through the city. Modeled after a traditional police motorcade, a gesture signifying respect amongst those who serve and protect, the "Sea of Blue" will travel northbound on East Parkway before guiding east over Sam Cooper Boulevard and taking the I240/40 Flyover west. Then, turning north on Thomas Street and later heading west on Whitney Avenue/Second Avenue, it will finally meet its culmination after a stately westbound journey on Adams Street, as per the Memphis Police Department.
The poignant memorial event is being held not just for colleagues in uniform to honor their late comrade, but also opens the space for the broader Memphis community to show their collective support. In a heartfelt reminder, the department's post implores the city's residents: "Please continue to remember and pray for Officer Cathey’s family, friends, classmates, and coworkers as they mourn. Support each other and stay strong." This rallying call serves to acknowledge the personal loss of those who were closest to Officer Cathey and as a reminder of the close-knit nature of those who make up the thin blue line, according to Memphis Police Department.
As twilight gives way to the spread of patrol car lights under the January sky, the "Sea of Blue" is more than a tribute—it's a testament to the fraternity that binds officers and the community in times of profound sorrow. Officer Cathey's memory, forever interwoven into the legacy of the Memphis Police Department, will thus be honored, with the very streets that he once patrolled mirroring the journey that he walked in life. The memorial procession winds its path through the city, inviting all those who hold Officer Cathey dear in their hearts to partake in one final salute, as detailed by the Memphis Police Department.
