Repair crews are set to focus on street imperfections over the ensuing weeks, utilizing two approaches for pothole repair: Hot Mix Asphalt, which is preferred for its durability and cost-effectiveness, and Cold Mix Asphalt, employed when the mercury dips below 40°F. Notably, Memphis operates its own asphalt production facility, which enables the city to perform repairs year-round without excessive financial burden to its Street Maintenance budget. Last year, Public Works filled a substantial number of 82,149 potholes, and, a city spokesperson assured that despite expected increases, sufficient funds are in place to manage these repair efforts.

Residents play a critical part in the pothole remediation process, as they are encouraged to report any road surface issues. Utilizing the city’s 311 system or a designated contact number, 901-636-6500, citizens enable the Public Works Division to address the reported potholes typically within a 5-10 business day timeframe. Moreover, artificial intelligence is being leveraged to improve the pothole detection process. Cameras mounted on municipal vehicles identify road faults automatically during routine traverses, channeling data back for review and action—streamlining operations to ensure the efficacy of response, as outlined by the City of Memphis.
