As tensions mount within the halls of Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS), the fate of Superintendent Dr. Marie Feagins hangs in the balance ahead of yesterday's crucial board meeting. With a tenure mired by contention and controversy, Feagins faces the possibility of dismissal after narrowly escaping an ouster vote in December. While some community members and state lawmakers support her, she has recently been critiqued for allegedly misleading the board on financial matters and mishandling administrative responsibilities.
The latest developments come in the wake of a survey circulated by the Memphis Shelby County Principals Association, indicating an overwhelming consensus among principals for a change in leadership. As reported by WREG, 98 percent of the respondents pushed for Feagins' contract termination. John Bush, President of the association, emphasized the need for steadfast resources and guidance, stating, "As principals, we are on the frontlines and our focus remains clear to ensure that our schools have the resources, support and guidance they need to serve our students effectively."
Having assumed her role in April 2024, Dr. Feagins has undergone scrutiny for handling federal grants intended for homeless students and approving a sizeable donation without board consent, as mentioned in the Commercial Appeal. Feagins' approach to staffing changes within the central office, which reportedly lacked board communication, adds to the pile of grievances facing her leadership.
The upcoming special meeting will decide Superintendent Feagins' destiny, following legal counsel's report that the board will review the allegations against her. According to reports by FOX13 Memphis, Feagins refutes charges of misleading the board on overtime costs and the previously mentioned grant and donation discrepancies. She described the allegations as baseless and meritless, maintaining her stance against the board's claims.
If the board opts for Feagins' termination, the search for an interim superintendent will be immediate.
