A harrowing incident in northwest Miami-Dade led to a desperate search for two children after their mother's vehicle was stolen with them inside. According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office, the white Mitsubishi SUV was taken yesterday when the mother stepped into a business on Northwest 50th Street and 71st Avenue, leaving her 2-year-old and 6-year-old in the backseat. The children were found safe after an officer located the vehicle less than a mile away, abandoned by the perpetrator, NBC Miami reported.

Detective Ángel Rodríguez highlighted the risks of leaving children unattended in an operational vehicle, implying that this was a stark reminder of potential dangers lurking in such acts of oversight. “It only takes a split second for someone to steal a vehicle,” Rodriguez said. “Unfortunately it happens too often,” as noted by NBC Miami.

The search was initiated after the children's mother reported the incident. Deputies and local authorities disseminated an alert, culminating in the discovery of the SUV by a Virginia Gardens Police officer. Inside, the children were found unharmed. “There is a good indication that when the vehicle was stolen the subjects did not know that there were children in the car and we're hoping that's why the vehicle was left abandoned,” Rodriguez said in a statement obtained by NBC Miami.

Rodriguez urged all parents and guardians to recognize the constant need for vigilance. “It is extremely important to never leave your vehicle unattended with the vehicle running, and especially if you have children in the car,” stated Rodriguez, according to a Local 10 report. Meanwhile, investigators continue their search for the unknown suspect(s) and are seeking the public's assistance.
