Commissioner Oliver G. Gilbert, III is setting the compass of education towards the rich history of the civil rights movement with the 2025 Spring Break Expedition: Civil Rights Tour. High schoolers from Miami-Dade County's District 1 have a chance to travel and learn through an immersive journey across key sites in Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia. The tour, part of an annual initiative aimed at expanding the worldviews of young individuals, follows in the footsteps of last year's excursion to Washington D.C., which delved into the heart of America's governmental and cultural heritage.
The expedition, which is set to take place from March 23 to March 29, invites students to literally step back in time, to more deeply, to understand the struggles and triumphs that have defined the ongoing fight for social justice in the United States. According to a press release by Miami-Dade County, the past expeditions have visited other significant American landmarks ranging from the expanse of the Grand Canyon to the bustling streets of New York City.
Amidst a diverse array of historical experiences, the Civil Rights Tour aims to provide a unique educational perspective for students who might not otherwise have the opportunity to witness these pivotal moments of history firsthand. "The goal is to show students from our community things that they may not have seen in ways they might not have been presented. I’m very excited about this trip," Gilbert was quoted in the Miami-Dade County's press release.
With the deadline for student applications approaching on January 24, interested parties are encouraged to act promptly to secure their place in this journey through the civil rights era. Applications are available for download, and for more details, students and parents can reach out by emailing [email protected] or by calling (305) 474-3011. It's a unique opportunity to not only see, but to feel the impact of a defining chapter in American history that continues to shape the modern narrative of social justice and equality.
