Miami-Dade Public Schools have taken a significant stride towards enhancing the educational landscape for its students at J.C. Bermudez Doral Senior High School with the announcement of a major renovation project. The ceremony to mark the beginning of construction was covered by WSVN, which reported that the school district is pumping $36.2 million into the overhaul of the existing facilities and the addition of new infrastructure.
The renovation includes the construction of a new three-story building with ample space to effectively handle 617 new student stations. The project also boasts a 2,000 seat capacity gymnasium, a Little Theater/Black Box Theater, a gymnastics dance studio, and a multi-purpose room. To further bolster the school's vocational and technological offerings, there will be four dedicated tech labs added along with 12 general classrooms and four science classrooms. WSVN quotes Miami-Dade superintendent Dr. Jose L. Dotres, "Students don’t come to school necessarily to just learn language arts or science or math, but to connect to their teachers to be part of something big in their life."
In addition to the new building, the existing Building Two is set to undergo renovations which include kitchen improvements, a covered dining area, a new weight room, along with updates to the wrestling room and new covered walkways. This massive investment was made viable by voter approval of the $1.2 billion General Obligation Bond in 2012, dedicated to modernizing school facilities, expanding student capacity, and enhancing safety and technology across all District schools.
Further elaborating on the importance of this development, NBC Miami reports insights from District 5 Miami-Dade County School board member Danny Espino who mentioned, “We’ll have a state-of-the-art gymnasium, locker rooms and weight room, we’ll have a black box theatre, dance studio multi-purpose room, which will create a bright space where the arts can flourish and students can express themselves and develop their talents, we’ll have a vocation and technology labs". The final phase of this transformative project, despite being estimated at a slightly lower figure of over $30 million, is eagerly anticipated by the students and faculty of J.C. Bermudez Senior High School, with a completion goal set for June 2026.
