As the city comes together to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava will take on the role of Grand Marshal during the 48th annual MLK Day Parade in Liberty City. The event, set to commence on Monday, will also feature Leroy Jones, founder of Neighbors and Neighbors Association, Inc. (NANA), as a Grand Marshal, as reported by Miami-Dade County's press release. The two are chosen for their dedication to service and community upliftment.
The theme "Never Give Up on the Dream" encapsulates Dr. King's persistent struggle for economic equity and social justice through peaceful protest. On a route hallowed by Dr. King's own footsteps during his visits to Miami, the parade will feature a vibrant display of solidarity and remembrance. According to the Miami-Dade County's announcement, the festivities are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. and follow along NW 54th Street, from NW 7th Avenue to NW 32nd Avenue.
Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava expressed her sentiment about the event, stating, "It’s a special honor to be recognized in Dr. Martin Luther King’s name and to be leading this historic parade in our county." She further told Miami-Dade County, "I am proud to honor his fight to fulfill America’s promise of opportunity for all and his courageous defense of democracy and human rights. I strive to embody his commitment to always choose love for our community and our nation."
The MLK Day Parade isn't just a march through Liberty City; it's a full-fledged celebration running until 6 p.m., culminating in the Family Festival at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Park. With an array of county employees taking part from various departments including Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, attendees can expect live music, food vendors, and activities for children. The Departments of Transportation and Public Works, Correction and Rehabilitation, among others, have enlisted themselves to take part, as detailed in the Miami-Dade County press release.
