After nearly two years since the devastating shootout at a Miami hookah lounge that claimed multiple lives, justice has started to take shape. The Miami-Dade Police Department's Homicide Bureau has successfully tracked down and arrested five individuals linked to the incident, bringing some closure to a case that remained open since June 6, 2021. As per details released by the department, a convergence of gunfire had erupted outside a business where a gathering was taking place, leading to several casualties and culminating in a fatal vehicle crash.
The incident, which unfolded at 109 Court SW 107 Street, Miami, FL, ended with a vehicle smashing into the wall of a nearby college, killing both occupants on impact, and claiming the life of a victim at Jackson South Medical Center while leaving five others in various conditions. A firearm discovered in the wrecked vehicle hinted at the violence that erupted that night, although motives had remained elusive, even now, the Homicide Bureau has not disclosed what events led up to the shooting they've managed to piece together a case solid enough to make arrests and press charges.
The collaborative efforts of local, state, and federal partners have been highlighted by Director Alfredo "Freddy" Ramirez III, who expressed pride in his detectives for their unwavering dedication to capturing those responsible for "the senseless shooting. "I am incredibly proud of my detectives for their hard work and dedication in capturing the individuals responsible for the senseless shooting at the Hookah Lounge during a graduation party. I understand how important it is for families to receive closure and justice when their loved ones have been victimized. I want to thank our local, state, and federal partners for their unwavering commitment to serving and protecting our community. I will continue to utilize all my resources to create a safe and healthy society where gun violence is no longer a threat to individuals and members of the community," Ramirez stated in a release by the Miami-Dade Police Department.
Those arrested include Willie Lee Thomas III, apprehended in Atlanta, Georgia, and Melchelzadek Jacory Matthews, taken into custody in Fort Myers, Florida, both facing second-degree murder charges among others. Following the apprehension of the last remaining subjects, Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz closed the tough chapter with a statement to the community, "Today, we close the book on a case that has weighed heavily on our community for far too long. After years of relentless determination, countless hours of investigation, and the unwavering support of those who refused to give up, justice has finally been served. While nothing can erase the pain of this tragedy or bring back the lives that were lost, I hope this resolution brings some measure of peace to the families and friends that were affected. This is another reminder that we never stop fighting for justice," as obtained by the Miami-Dade Police Department.
State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle also expressed relief over the arrests and the journey towards justice for the victims' families, stating, “After almost two years of dedicated collaboration between my team of Assistant State Attorneys and the Miami-Dade Police Department Homicide Detectives, those responsible for the tragic deaths during what was supposed to be a night of celebration, are finally being brought to justice. The over a dozen warrants that my prosecutors generated and filed assisted the difficult work of our law enforcement partners gathering the necessary information and leads that have resulted in these arrests and the filing of criminal charges. It is my hope that the families of the victims may now begin their journey of healing and find the justice they so deserve," as she remarked in an official statement.
