A Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office motorcycle deputy was critically injured in a collision yesterday. The incident took place in the area of Southwest 152nd Street and 138th Avenue. According to NBC Miami, the deputy, a 35-year-old and an 8-year veteran, was heading westbound when a car abruptly turned in front of him, leading to the crash. The motorman, whose name has not yet been released, was hospitalized with multiple fractures and is reported to be in stable but critical condition.
Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz addressed the gravity of the situation, saying, "Our deputy is in stable, but critical, condition; he’s got multiple fractures and he’s currently being assessed by the staff here at the hospital," as stated by NBC Miami. Aerial footage displayed the deputy's motorcycle lying damaged on the road, alongside the silver sedan involved. The events leading up to the accident are currently under investigation. Tragically, this crash comes on the heels of another incident where three Palm Beach County motorcycle unit deputies were killed less than two months earlier.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded to the scene and transported the injured deputy to Jackson South Medical Center, as detailed by Local 10. Fellow deputies and a group of motormen were seen outside the trauma center as Sheriff Cordero-Stutz provided an update on his condition. While the cause of the crash is yet to be confirmed, Sheriff Cordero-Stutz emphasized the vulnerability of motorcycle riders and the need for driver awareness, especially regarding texting and driving.
In her statement, Sheriff Cordero-Stutz urged drivers "to not text and drive and to always look out for motorcycles." She cautioned, "Whether it’s a motorman or anyone on a motorcycle, they clearly do not have an advantage," as per information from Local 10.
