This MLK weekend, the Miami-Dade Department of Solid Waste Management (DSWM) will be front and center at a series of events paying homage to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s enduring impact. According to a recent press release from Miami-Dade County, DSWM has a packed schedule that includes participation in parades and community clean-up activities celebrating the civil rights leader's legacy from tomorrow to Monday.
In a grand display of affinity and respect, DSWM will kick off its tributes tomorrow with their fleet adorning the Miami-Dade County logo at the West Perrine MLK Parade in South Miami-Dade. Following this, the department will back an FIU's MLK Day of Service event with a neighborhood clean-up around the historic Hampton House in Brownsville, a notable site where Dr. King once delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech.
The culmination of these commemorative endeavors will see DSWM's involvement in the 48th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parade & Festivities in Liberty City. This parade, having started in 1977, holds the distinction of being the first and oldest MLK parade in the United States, continuing to embody Dr. King's powerful legacy.
“We are deeply honored to take part in these significant celebrations honoring Dr. King’s life and legacy,” expressed Aneisha Daniel, PhD, Director of DSWM, in a statement obtained by Miami-Dade County. Daniel further acknowledged Dr. King's significant relation with the sanitation workers, reinforcing the message of dignity and equality across all professions. The DSWM extends full-service waste collection and disposal to over 340,000 households in Miami-Dade County, serving as a testament to its commitment to community enhancement and service.
