In observance of the upcoming Martin Luther King Jr. Day, City of Miami officials have announced that the Department of Solid Waste will suspend its operations for the holiday. According to a recent City of Miami notice, this suspension means there will be no garbage, recycling, or bulky trash collection services on Monday. The department, which typically operates on a daily basis, will be closing its doors in reverence to the historic civil rights leader's legacy.
Residents who normally expect to see sanitation workers on the third Monday will not be seeing them this time around. Instead, recycling services are being rescheduled to Wednesday. With respect to this change, the public is advised to hold onto their waste—be it refuse, recyclables, or larger unwieldy items—until services resume. When that time comes, community members should ensure all items are placed curbside, adhering to the City’s standard placement guidelines, and ready for collection at least 24 hours before the newly scheduled pickup day.
The implications of this temporary closure extend to the Mini Dump Facility located at 1290 NW 20th Street as well. Echoing the department's holiday schedule, this facility will also take a pause, not reopening until Tuesday, with its regular operational hours set from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. As per usual, individuals looking to utilize the facility once it reopens will need to present proof of their residency within the City of Miami.
City officials urge anyone with questions or concerns to reach out for more information. Inquiries can be directed to the Department of Solid Waste via their website, or through contacting the customer service team at 305-960-2801, or by simply dialing 3-1-1. This information was outlined in a communication meant to ensure all residents are prepared and informed about the temporary alterations to their waste collection schedule, an adjustment made in respect to a day that calls for national reflection and remembrance.
