A Minneapolis woman is now facing charges after allegedly supplying her juvenile son with a firearm, a move that has underscored the challenges with juvenile crime in the city. The Minneapolis Police Department shared in a social media post that multiple counts, including aiding an offender and contributing to the delinquency of a child, have been levied against the mother following a months-long investigation.
Amid a series of violent events last summer, which spurred the initiation of a Crime Spree Protocol, law enforcement officers attempted to stop a vehicle linked to these crimes. The suspects managed to initially escape, leading to a chase that concluded at a multifamily residence. It was here that three juveniles, including the woman's son, attempted to hastily evade capture, two entering an apartment. A subsequent search warrant revealed several firearms within, one of which was supposedly given to the juvenile by his own mother, who was aware of his prior felony-level offenses.
The charges, formalized on January 8, were announced after extensive police work, with Hennepin County Attorney’s Office seeing sufficient evidence to proceed. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara highlighted the direness of juvenile crime, stating, "The issues we are facing related to violent juvenile crime is an emergency. It is outrageous to think that a parent was providing a gun to her juvenile son when she knew that he had been accused of felony-level crimes." He continued, emphasizing the need for community involvement in tackling the issue, "We need everyone in the community to address crime, and that certainly includes parents."
O’Hara also specifically mentioned the non-stop effort by investigators to identify the adults that are providing access to guns to these juveniles. This case emerges as a pointed example of their dedication to mitigating such activities that contribute to the ongoing problem of youth involvement in violent crime. With formal charges placed, the Minneapolis Police Department seems determined to rigorously enforce the law, signaling a clear message to the community regarding gun possession among juveniles.
