Minneapolis youth looking to get a head start on their careers can now apply for the "Step Up" internship program, as announced by the City of Minneapolis. This initiative provides historically underserved high school and college students with paid work experience to enhance their career readiness. According to the program's official page, Mayor Jacob Frey praised the interns for bringing "fresh perspectives and incredible talent" to local businesses.
Open to residents between the ages of 14 and 21, "Step Up" matches interns with a diverse range of internships from small local businesses to large Fortune 100 companies. The program is designed to help young people explore their passions, develop practical skills, and to quickly connect with industry professionals. In a statement posted on the City of Minneapolis' website, "Step Up" Director Tammy Dickinson emphasized the importance of investing in youth work skills as a means to strengthen the entire community.
Since its inception in 2003, "Step Up" has facilitated over 34,000 internships, boasting partners such as Achieve Twin Cities, Minnesota CareerForce, and Project for Pride in Living. Notable companies that have hired interns in the past include Target, US Bank, Pillsbury United, and Cookie Cart. The number of internships offered each year is contingent upon employer participation.
Alumni of the program have voiced their approval, with Nick, a former intern with Tree Trust, detailing to the City of Minneapolis how "Step Up" helped him find a job that was tailored to his preferences. Warren, who worked with Minnesota Trades Academy, praised the teamwork aspect, stating, "Teamwork gets everything done faster, and you can make connections with new people."
Eligible applicants must complete online work readiness training to qualify for an internship. Those who qualify but don't secure an internship can still engage in online career exploration programming. The deadline to apply for the program is Feb. 14, with notifications of acceptance going out by Feb. 17. Companies interested in hosting interns can submit an interest form through March 31.
