While zoning in times past has often been about setting restrictions and detailing what property owners could not do, recent trends point toward proactive zoning, shaping ordinances around what can be done to flesh out a municipality's forward-looking plan, the updated approach looks to support what property owners can do to propel the community's broader objectives forward, this shift in perspective presents a more positive outlook on property development. The city council has backed the notion of a full rewrite following an analysis by a consultant in 2023, which found that the existing ordinance needed refinements to meet the aims of the 2040 Comprehensive Plan.
The overhaul of the zoning code is expected to run for 18 months and will involve city staff and a workgroup, with built-in chances for residents to voice their input throughout the revision process. Susan Thomas, Assistant City Planner, was quoted on Minnetonkamatters.com saying, "Our goal is to ensure the city's zoning ordinance is easy to understand and reflects the community's best interest."
