Chief John Drake of the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department (MNPD) has recognized the department's top contributors of 2024, acknowledging a cadre of employees whose acts of bravery, commitment, and compassion reflect their service to the community. At an afternoon ceremony, Drake expressed deep gratitude for the team and their families, emphasizing the sacrifices inherent in law enforcement careers.
The honorees spanned different units within the MNPD. Notably, Detective Adam Reese from the Homicide Unit was named Investigative Services Bureau Investigator of the Year for his year-long investigation into a double murder case, according to a statement issued by the Nashville government website. His work led to the indictment of the accused on two counts of first-degree murder. Also lauded were Officers Brandon Pedigo and Cameron Van Der Merwe for apprehending a young murder suspect in less than 20 minutes following an incident at Red Caboose Park.
Detective Steven Powers' investigative expertise earned him Community Services Bureau Investigator of the Year. Powers cracked the case on a string of commercial burglaries executed by juveniles. Additionally, Officer Dawn Thornsberry was celebrated for her impactful community outreach, particularly noted for her engagement with children at the Martha O'Bryan Center in East Nashville. "She's become a part of our family…she truly cares…there is an obvious joy she has being around our kids…they light up around her and feel comfortable in her presence," a site coordinator observed in her praise, as reported by the Nashville government website.
The Support Services Bureau Officers of the Year boasted a team effort including Officer & Helicopter Pilot William Waters, Tactical Flight Officer Graham Binkley, and Canine Officers Ryan Coll and Thomas Smith, along with their partners, Diesel and Talon. Their coordinated response led to the capture of five individuals following a shootout with an undercover detective. Ms. Melissa White from Human Resources was recognized as the Professional Support Employee of the Year for her exceptional handling of FMLA processes and her dedication to assisting employees. As the city acknowledges these exemplary actions, it's also noted that officers Smith and Binkley are currently on military assignment and were unable to attend the festivities.
