A New Orleans man, Geourvon Sears, has been sentenced to 111 months in prison for federal drug and weapons violations. Sears, 27, was sentenced by Chief U.S. District Judge Nannette Jolivette Brown on Thursday last week. In addition to his prison term, Sears will serve five years of supervised release and pay a $200 mandatory special assessment fee. The announcement, made yesterday, confirmed his guilty plea to charges of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, tapentadol, and marijuana, and possessing firearms related to his drug trafficking, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office press release.

Court documents show that on June 6, 2024, officers from the New Orleans Police Department executed a search warrant at Sears’s home. They found a backpack belonging to Sears with methamphetamine, tapentadol, and marijuana intended for sale. The search also led to the seizure of two loaded firearms: a Romarm/Cugir Model Mini Draco semi-automatic pistol and a Norinco Model SKS rifle.

The case is part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) initiative, which aims to reduce violent crime and gun violence. The PSN strategy, enhanced on May 26, 2021, focuses on building community trust, supporting violence prevention organizations, enforcing strategic priorities, and assessing their impact. Assistant U.S. Attorney David Berman of the Violent Crime Unit is leading the prosecution, working with the FBI and the New Orleans Police Department.
