New York Attorney General Letitia James isn't letting President Trump's latest executive order fly without a fight. The president's bold move to end birthright citizenship has been met with staunch opposition, specifically from James, who wasted no time issuing a statement yesterday rejecting the order's legitimacy.
James' statement, according to her press release, pointed out a clear cut constitutional conflict, “For over 156 years, the United States Constitution has clearly stated that anyone born on our nation’s soil is a citizen of the United States.” She accuses President Trump of trying to run around the 14th Amendment, an act she implies, borders on unconstitutional.
Not shying away from a firm stance, James states that the executive order serves as a tool that could create division and fear among the populace. She also expresses readiness to utilize the full extent of the law to protect constitutional integrity, which she argues is being threatened. She conveys that any attempts to alter citizenship rights guaranteed by the 14th Amendment will be met with legal action.
There’s more to it than just legal posturing. James reiterates her commitment to the immigrant community, promising both on-mic and in legal briefings to safeguard their rights and those of their families. “As Attorney General, I will always protect the legal rights of immigrants and their families and communities. We are reviewing our legal options,” she stated, according to the New York Attorney General’s Office.
