Oakland Park Man Charged with Vehicular Homicide in 124 mph Pompano Beach CrashSource: Broward Sheriff's Office

A 49-year-old Oakland Park man, Angelo Michael Ragonese, has been arrested in connection with a high-speed crash that occurred last September in Pompano Beach, resulting in the death of another driver, according to officials. The crash, as reported by NBC 6, involved Ragonese's BMW M4 coupe which was estimated to be travelling at 124 mph just moments before the collision.

The Local 10 news outlet detailed that the crash took place when the BMW T-boned a Toyota Camry while it was making a turn, sending the latter vehicle rotating and careening into the front of a Truist Bank. Witnesses claimed to have observed Ragonese's car maneuvering around other vehicles at high speed and reported that he seemed to be under the influence, even becoming confrontational with a nurse who was trying to provide assistance at the scene.

Ragonese, who now faces charges that include vehicular homicide and DUI manslaughter, reportedly refused to offer a voluntary blood sample after the crash. According to authorities, a search warrant later enabled the collection of blood samples which confirmed the presence of cocaine. Additionally, data from the vehicle's recorder indicated a significant discrepancy between the car's speed at the moment of airbag deployment—83 mph—and the posted speed limit of 35 mph.

A tragic outcome was the result of the incident; the driver of the Toyota Camry died just two days after the accident from injuries sustained. The BSO arrest affidavit, as obtained by NBC 6, revealed that Ragonese's juvenile son was also in the BMW when the crash happened and though injured, the son's injuries were non-life-threatening. Ragonese himself was treated and released from the hospital shortly after.

The suspect is currently being held at the Broward Main Jail without bond. As the case proceeds, further insights into the circumstances surrounding the fatal event are likely to unfold.
