Tragedy struck an Ogden community as two minors experienced firsthand the perilous nature of winter's end. On a day when the ice looked solid, yet was treacherously thin, a 15-year-old fell through while fishing at a local pond.
Efforts to rescue the teenager turned desperate as, according to FOX 13, search and rescue teams worked tirelessly after the minor had been submerged in the frigid waters for over two hours. The community's fear was palpable, the loss immense as the young life hung in balance against nature's unforgiving elements.
In the wake of the incident, authorities issued vital warnings about the deceptive dangers present in transitional weather. "With the weather warming up, cooling down, people need to be very careful around the water," Ogden Police Lt. John Cox said, as obtained by ABC4. He added, "It takes no time at all in this kind of condition to get hypothermic and… sustain some injuries, so we just encourage the public to be very very careful around the ice.."
The 15-year-old, who managed to escape the icy waters, was treated for mild hypothermia as detailed by Mike McBride with Ogden City, per KSL NewsRadio. But the relief for one family, contrasted with agony for another as dive teams continued the arduous search for the second victim, a 14-year-old companion. The latter was eventually located and extracted from the water, and helicopter transport to Primary Children’s Hospital followed in a swift attempt to rewrite a narrative seemingly set in stone by the cold hands of chance.
