Oklahoma City residents are being targeted by a phone scam where callers pose as the city's Utilities Department, claiming past due balances. The Oklahoma City officials have issued warnings, as reported by The Oklahoman, stating that scammers are using caller ID spoofing to make their calls appear legitimate.
According to the city, any notices of past due balances are posted on the property, with a minimum 48-hour notice for residential and commercial customers and a seven-day notice for multi-family unit customers before disconnection, according to a News 9 report.
KFOR reported that the city would never call to demand money over the phone. Residents who receive these calls are advised not to provide payment information and to contact the OKC Utilities Department directly at 405-297-2833 to verify their account status or address any concerns about their utility bills.
