In a move addressing a critical healthcare gap in Palm Beach County, commissioners have unanimously backed a $10 million investment for a new mental health and substance use crisis center. According to reports from Health News Florida, the allocation of federal COVID relief funds to the $60 million project comes after an emotional public meeting, where the urgency of the mental health crisis was a central topic.
Despite the promise of future aid, concerns remain over the long wait for the facility's doors to open. Commissioners expressed their unease with a timeline that could stretch out nearly five years. "We need this as quickly as possible and not to have it drag out," Commissioner Marci Woodward was quoted as stating by Health News Florida.
The center, run by the Health Care District of Palm Beach County, is poised to provide a spectrum of services including primary and 24/7 care, as well as in-patient and outpatient offerings. Health Care District CEO Darcy Davis, as noted by WPTV, asserted that building this complex infrastructure is not a "small lift."
During the emotionally charged meeting, Ladi Goldwire shared the distressing account of her son, Donel Elam, who has been diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder and was hospitalized 87 times under the Baker Act. Goldwire tearfully explained her son's current detainment in St. Lucie County Jail after exhausting psychiatric care benefits, a location that unfortunately has become a makeshift mental health service provider. "You can't imagine the guilt of doing something like that just to try and come up with a solution," Goldwire told the commissioners in a statement obtained by WPTV.
Solidifying the community's support for the project, Tony Spatera from West Palm Beach Police Department said, "This central receiving facility is absolutely necessary. The revolving door of arrest and Baker Act and emergency department trips are heartbreaking," in a statement reported by Health News Florida.
As the search for a suitable location for the facility continues, the Health Care District narrows options to two sites. The urgency to finalize these details and secure expedited construction permitting has been echoed by the commissioners, pointing toward a collective drive to tackle the growing crisis head-on.
