Jim Knowles, who led the nation's top defense last season, is joining Penn State as their new defensive coordinator. The former Ohio State defensive coordinator and national champion is moving to Happy Valley after being credited with transforming the Buckeyes’ defense into a top-tier unit. His decision was reported by Griffin Media's Toby Rowland, following speculation that he might join the Sooners, as mentioned by News 9.

"Reliable sources confirm that barring last second change of heart, Jim Knowles is headed to Penn State. He has notified James Franklin that he’ll accept their offer of well over $3 million to be highest paid coordinator in college football history. Knowles is from Philly," Rowland told News 9. ESPN confirmed that Knowles is expected to sign a three-year deal worth an average of $3.1 million per season.

This move leaves Oklahoma in a difficult position, especially given their efforts to strengthen their defense through the NCAA transfer portal. Despite this, The Oklahoman notes that OU has successfully added defensive talent, including star edge rusher Marvin Jones Jr. from Florida State.

Knowles had a successful tenure at Ohio State, winning a national title and leading the Buckeyes’ defense to third in the country in 2023 before reaching the top spot in 2024. His previous work at Oklahoma State from 2018-2021, where he helped the Cowboys achieve one of the highest-ranked defenses in the nation, according to the OU Daily.
