The annual event unfolded at the now-closed Metrocenter mall, attracting hundreds of attendees adorned in inventive costumes, from seasoned cosplayers to families enjoying the free outdoor "Cosplay and Comic" festival. According to Phoenix New Times, the local cosplay scene was vibrant, featuring characters like Hawkman and Sabine Wren, alongside fan-favorite groups including Arizona Morphin Grid.
But Superhero Saturday was more than just a showcase of carefully crafted costumes. The event, hosted by the Phoenix Police Sergeants and Lieutenants Association (PPSLA), aimed to raise funds to duly support first responders and their families, along with Childhelp, a nonprofit combating child abuse. "It has something for everybody," Phoenix Police Lt. Mark Schweikert told AZFamily, highlighting the diverse appeal of the event that also featured acrobatics and celebrity appearances, with all proceeds designated for laudable philanthropic efforts.
The creativity of participants was on full display with one standout cosplay by Noel Raccoon, who took home the "Best in Show" accolade for her portrayal of Lady Dimitrescu from "Resident Evil Village," as noted by the Phoenix New Times. The costume masquerade, presided over by special guest and professional cosplayer Ivy Doomkitty, brought the community's artistry and enthusiasm into the spotlight, offering trophies across multiple categories.
Kicking off at 10 a.m. and continuing until 4 p.m., Saturday's event not only paid homage to everyone's beloved fictional saviors but also to the authentic ones tirelessly working behind the scenes. "I absolutely love this event because it honors the brave young heroes that inspire us daily," Ken McKinley with Childhelp expressed to AZFamily.
