The fast-growing sport of pickleball is making a raucous return to Surprise, Arizona, with not just one, but three upcoming tournaments slinging into action at the City of Surprise Pickleball Courts. Kicking off the trio of events is the Tommy Wong Memorial Pickleball Tournament, slated from January 31 to February 3, the City of Surprise announced recently.
Expect to see competitors fiercely — but charmingly — aiming to gently best each other in the double elimination format, with categories including women’s doubles, men’s doubles, mixed doubles, and not to forget, senior mixed doubles. This particular competition honors the late Tommy Wong and is fully sanctioned by the United States Amateur Pickleball Association (USAPA). Those eager to take part can find registration details and further intel by visiting Tommy Wong Memorial.
Following the memorial event, the courts will host the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Charity Pickleball Tournament from March 14 to 16. Echoing the former event's structure, this tournament is also SPA and USAPA sanctioned, featuring the same lineup of doubles play across categories. This tournament mixes competitive spirit with altruism as proceeds go towards MS research and support. Interested parties are directed to check out more at MS Charity Pickleball Tournament for pertinent information.
April brings the final showdown dubbed the Battle of the Paddles Pickleball Tournament happening April 5-6. Players will have to be prepared to certainly up their game as this SPA double elimination competition promises to showcase some of the best women’s doubles, men’s doubles, and mixed doubles pairs around. Details to dive into the battle are available at Battle of the Paddles Tournament.
Those who'd rather watch the dinks and slams than participate can do so without parting with a cent, as spectating these tournaments is completely free. Hunker down at the address 14534 W. Tierra Buena Ln to catch all the action. But heads up, would-be casual players: The courts will be closed for open play throughout these tournaments, so plan your recreational pickleball accordingly.
