Downtown Portland is experiencing an upsurge in vitality, evidenced by a promising increase in foot traffic throughout 2024. Growth in visitors and the success of multiple retail openings and city-center events have contributed to this urban resurgence. According to a report by KGW, the cityscape is echoing a recovery narrative with high-profile events and retail ventures paving the way.

Supporting this upward trend, the Downtown Portland Clean & Safe report mentioned a general increase in foot traffic by 3% over the past year. In conversation with KATU, Julienne Baptiste, a bartender at Momo downtown, attributed the growth to significant events and premium shopping experiences. "I think what’s working is having the events downtown. Like for New Year's, they have the drone show, there’s more shows going on, Nordstrom is huge, like having that boutique and you know Gucci, Chanel, all that stuff in there, it brings a lot of people," she said, while also highlighting the city's reputation as a food haven urging people to explore new culinary offerings.

More than just a transient spike in visitor engagement, there has also been a tangible uptick in workplace occupancy. The KPTV reported a significant 54% climb in foot traffic since the pandemic low, with an 8% increase for employees working downtown compared to the prior year. This rebound can be partly credited to large-scale events, like the Rockstar Energy Open at Tom McCall Waterfront Park and LiveNation concerts at Providence Park, which helped revitalize the local economic landscape. With more people back at work, the face of downtown Portland is steadily changing.

Reveling in this urban revival, city officials and residents are optimistic about the sustained growth and continued renaissance of downtown Portland. The wave of new retail openings, from the local boutiques to internationally recognized brands like Nordstrom, has signaled a strong retail resurgence crucial for the economic health of the city. As foot traffic nears pre-pandemic levels, the vibrancy of urban life in Portland is a testament to the city's durability and attraction. Nordstrom, together with luxury counterparts such as Gucci and Chanel, are drawing crowds, a clear sign of consumer confidence that is steadily returning, as emphasized in the reports.
