Big plans are kicking off for the Mira Mesa Epicentre, with county officials and residents starting the renovations yesterday for what's set to transform into a community hub operated by San Diego County. The 8450 Mira Mesa Boulevard project is designed to remake the space into a recreation center, primarily aiding the youth, based on feedback from those it aims to serve.
The design includes plenty of amenities—a multifunctional pickleball and basketball court, a community garden, an open lawn area for those who need to stretch their legs or throw a Frisbee, rentable spaces for events, and a music room for the rising Beethovens and Beyonce among us. With innovative programming in the pipeline, the new Epicentre is touted to enhance recreational options, boost access to public services, and promote community safety.
According to the County of San Diego, youth and even the not-so-youthful will find attractions like a game room and a practice kitchen, not to mention flexible study areas for when the library just isn't cutting it, or home is too distracting.
What's equally noteworthy is this renovation will mark a permanent residence for the County’s SD Nights program, known for providing teens with safe places for youth-centered activities when they're most likely to find trouble—or when trouble finds them, this initiative is part of a larger effort to keep kids off the streets during those dicey twilight hours. The County Department of Parks and Recreation took the lead on rallying community input and touching base with residents, businesses, and stakeholders—all to ensure the new Epicentre truly reflects the Mira Mesa community's hopes and necessities.
