An apartment complex in south suburban Chicago Ridge erupted in flames on Saturday evening, leaving the entire building's residents without homes as the brisk chill of January winds offered no reprieve. The fire, which was reported before 5:00 p.m. at a three-story building along Brooks Lane near Interstate 294, presented challenges for the firefighters due to the frigid cold and heavy winds, as reported by NBC Chicago. Smoke from the blaze could be observed billowing and stretching south onto the interstate.
Amid the chaos, resident Sandra Pfingsten recently a first-floor occupant, shared her harrowing experience with NBC Chicago, "I don’t even have my shoes," and, "I was lucky I grabbed my purse because it was right next to the door with my laptop." Losses ran deep as Pfingsten explained, "I just lost all the pictures, just everything is gone."
Although the immediate cause of the fire has yet to be determined, investigations are underway. Chicago Ridge Fire Chief Bob Smart communicated to WGN News that firefighters initially fought the blaze from the building's exterior and had not conducted an interior offensive at the time of the reports. Smart also mentioned that the fire department is collaborating with the American Red Cross to arrange warming shelters for those displaced by the fire.
Reassuringly, no injuries have been reported in connection with the incident. Remarkably, all residents were accounted for and displaced, Chicago Ridge fire officials informed NBC Chicago. The American Red Cross, in its continuing efforts, is assisting those affected in finding refuge from the cold, amidst the loss of their homes and possessions.
