On Monday, a Salem teenager was detained in Northeast Portland while carrying a loaded semiautomatic rifle, raising concerns among local residents. According to KOIN, the 15-year-old was spotted outside a restaurant with a firearm described as black-and-red. Initially thought to be a replica, the situation proved more dire when the weapon was discovered to be genuine.

Police were tipped off by a caller at 11:35 a.m. and found the teen departing the scene with a group of underage individuals at NE 81st and Flanders. KPTV noted that the suspect was apprehended without incident and transported to the Donald E. Long Juvenile Detention facility. There, the teenager faces multiple charges, including Unlawful Possession of a Firearm and Unlawful Possession of a Loaded Firearm in Public, plus outstanding violations related to probation from an unrelated case.

The rifle, a red-painted .223 caliber weapon, adds to the growing concerns over armed minors in public spaces. As reported by KATU, despite no injuries resulting from this incident and no additional arrests made at the time, authorities are continuing their investigation.

No motive has been disclosed by police in reference to why the teen was walking in the neighborhood with the assault rifle.
