During a routine patrol, Salt Lake City Police Department officers apprehended a 54-year-old man, Troy Olson, on the Jordan River Trail. Olson, wanted on felony drug charges, was also caught with stolen mail. According to SLCPD, Police Chief Mike Brown underscored the importance of community reporting, which led to the discovery and arrest of Olson, “This is why I encourage people to report illegal activity in our community."
Police initiated the investigation late Sunday after receiving tips on illegal camping, later locating Olson at 1170 West California Avenue. The records check revealed his active felony warrants, which the police acted upon to swiftly detain him. In a search, the police found not only evidence of drug use but also what appeared to quickly be intending to sell said drugs.
The items recovered from Olson included drugs and a glass pipe marked by burn residue, indicating usage. The officers developed probable cause, believing Olson had intentions of both using and distributing the substances in his possession. As a result, Olson was taken to the Salt Lake County Metro Jail, where he faces charges of unlawful possession of a controlled substance and one count of mail theft.
