The Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) has released body-worn camera footage following standard protocol after an officer-involved critical incident (OICI) occurred earlier this month. The footage is part of a transparency effort under Salt Lake City ordinance 2.10.200, which mandates such releases in the aftermath of critical events involving law enforcement officers.
According to the SLCPD, the incident unfolded quickly and resulted in the death of 32-year-old Chandler Grillone, who approached an officer during a routine traffic stop "while the officer was in his car." Police Chief Mike Brown expressed relief that the injured officer wasn't harmed more severely, acknowledging the situation as dangerous, with Grillone posing a "serious and imminent threat to his life and potentially the lives of others."
This recent case is the second of its kind for SLCPD in 2025. The encounter took place near 375 South 765 West, around 1:41 a.m. on January 9. Body-cam footage shows the suspect, now deceased, confronting and attacking the officer, who was accompanied by a community member on a ride-along. Despite multiple commands from the officer, Grillone, armed with a weapon, began advancing towards the police vehicle before the officer discharged at least one round.
The initial reports suggested no other injuries, however, information has since surfaced that the SLCPD officer sustained an injury consistent with a sharp-edged object, which is not considered life-threatening. A weapon was recovered from Grillone at the scene, details of which remain undisclosed as the investigation continues. It's also noted there was no 9-1-1 call associated with this case, and portions of the released footage have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information.
