To maintain transparency, the Salt Lake City Police Department has released several body-worn camera (BWC) videos following a critical officer-involved incident. The release adheres to Salt Lake City ordinance and comes amidst various investigations into the event which involved arson, a vehicle chase, and gunfire.

The SLCPD, while providing updates, has conveyed that the scenario was a complex operation, demanding immediate response to ensure the safety of both officers and the community. Tanner Cottrell, a 27-year-old involved in the incident, was later found deceased after the police pursuit ended in a crash. "This was a dynamic and high-risk situation involving significant public safety concerns," said Salt Lake City Police Chief Mike Brown. "Our officers are committed to maintaining public safety at all times," Brown said, as obtained by SLCPD.

The incident in question began with a response to a structure fire on January 1, 2025, that escalated into an aggravated arson investigation. Cottrell was linked to the crime, along with the theft of a Ford F-350, and the possible possession of firearms and a ballistic vest. After an outside agency spotted Cottrell in the stolen vehicle, a pursuit ensued which traversed multiple jurisdictions and involved return fire from the suspect.

Despite the use of spike strips by law enforcement, Cottrell continued to drive until the vehicle crashed around 12:30 a.m. on January 3. The subsequent confrontation at the crash site involved six law enforcement agencies. Law enforcement determined that Cottrell died on the scene. "Law enforcement used spike strips, which damaged the vehicle’s tires, but Cottrell continued driving," as detailed by SLCPD. Seven SLCPD officers connected to the incident have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard practice pending investigation outcomes.

These critical investigations are being independently led by the West Jordan Police Department's OICI Protocol Team 4. In line with protocols, OICI Team 4 is to thoroughly evaluate the situation away from internal influence to ensure unbiased findings.
