Tragedy struck an apartment complex at 1150 E. St., San Diego when an officer-involved shooting resulted in the death of a suicidal male yesterday. Officers from the San Diego Police Department Central Division responded to a call at around 6:54 p.m., concerning a man threatening suicide with a knife. According to the San Diego County Sheriff's Office, the individual's roommate had discovered him upon returning home and promptly contacted the police.
Upon their arrival, two officers managed to safely lead six other individuals from the scene to face the distressed man still inside the apartment. In a confrontation with the man, who brandished a knife and threatened the officers, they demanded he drop the weapon. The situation escalated quickly, resulting in one of the officers discharging their firearm. Following the shooting, the officers immediately began life-saving measures, later assisted by paramedics from the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, only for the man to later pass away at the hospital from his injuries. The release from the sheriff's department adds that no officers sustained injuries during the incident.
The involved officers, each with four and a half years of experience at the San Diego Police Department and assigned to the Central Division, now find themselves at the center of detailed investigations conducted by multiple agencies. The San Diego County Sheriff's Office Homicide Unit is currently leading the inquiry into the officer-involved shooting. "The investigation and review process for officer-involved shootings are extremely thorough," the department emphasizes, as detectives dive into gathering evidence, witness interviews, and examining the shooting's context.
Further protocol dictates that after the Homicide Unit finalizes its investigation, the San Diego County District Attorney's Office will review the case to determine any criminal liability that may apply to the officers. Complementing this criminal review, there will also be an administrative investigation by the San Diego Police Department focused specifically on the discharge of the weapon. Concerned individuals with any information about the incident are encouraged to contact the Homicide Unit at (858) 285-6330 or after hours at (858) 868-3200.
