San Francisco commuters can expect some tweaks to their travel routine starting February 1 as SFMTA rolls out changes to Muni service due to financial constraints. To preserve reliability amidst a budget shortfall, some routes will see reduced service while a new downtown express service is introduced to aid in the city's economic recovery. These adjustments are also formulated to align with rider demand and feedback, SFMTA reports.
The changes include returning the 30X Marina Express with two-morning trips. The 1X California Express will drop two of its morning trips, an unfortunate but necessary move "due to budget constraints," states the SFMTA post. If the Marina Express isn't your line, brace for reduced frequency midday on the 24 Divisadero, 38 Geary, and 43 Masonic routes, reflecting their lesser use during the meridian hours.
On weekends, the K Ingleside and M Ocean View will move to single-car trains as a cost-saving maneuver to offset lower usage than other lines. Meanwhile, in the pedestrian realm, expect stop adjustments and increased seating along the 29 Sunset as part of the Improvement Project. The SFMTA anticipates that these changes will facilitate swifter and more reliable Muni operations, elevating the public transit experience in the city by the bay.
Certain individual stops are also on the chopping block, like the bus stop at Vicente St & 47th Ave, set to be removed for a more streamlined service. Looking down the road, March 15 will shorten the 30S Stockton "Short" route's endpoint. This is in response to SFMTA’s "major budget shortfall due to the pandemic," the SFMTA says, a stark reminder that the reverberations of the global health crisis continue to be felt. Additional changes will be announced early this year, with public feedback shaping the final decisions.
